Olson Kundig is a Seattle-based design practice founded on the ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Led by five owners, the firm’s work can be found across the globe, with projects as wide ranging as huts to high rises, homes—often for art collectors—to academic, cultural and civic projects, museums and exhibition design, places of worship, creative production, urban design and interior design.

Olson Kundig Architects began its creative existence with architect Jim Olson, whose work in the late 1960s explored the relationship between dwellings and the landscape they inhabit in the Northwest. Olson started the firm based on some simple ideas: that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. In 1996, Tom Kundig joined Olson as an owner, taking the firm to another level of creative exploration and helping it grow into an office with an international reputation. Alan Maskin and Kirsten Murray joined the owners group in 2008, continuing the evolution of the firm and furthering its commitment to the experience around architecture, articulated in exhibit design, interiors, and connections to urban and rural landscapes. Over the past three decades, Tom Kundig has received some of the world’s highest design honors, including a National Design Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2012, he was inducted into Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame. Kundig’s work has received over 50 awards from the American Institute of Architects, including seven National Honor Awards and seven National Housing Awards. His work has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide such as The New York Times, The Telegraph, Architectural Record, Financial Times, Architectural Digest and The Wall Street Journal, and countless books including House, the recently-released volume by Diane Keaton. He is named in The Wallpaper* 150 as a key individual who has influenced, inspired and improved the way we live, work and travel.
Contrasting the Contextual: Designs Revitalizing Seattle's Neighborhoods Panelists include Tom Kundig; Kirsten R. Murray; Scott Redman, Sellen Construction; Karen True, Alliance for Pioneer Square. Two OK projects will be featured as part of the discussion: 9th & Thomas and 74 S Jackson. "There are no blank sites in architecture. Every building must inevitably engage with context: the layers of history, culture, and ecology embedded in and surrounding the site. Recent amplification of development activity in Seattle’s Pioneer Square and South Lake Union neighborhoods brings this issue to the fore. With historic preservation as background for the latter and the seemingly unstoppable technology boom rapidly transforming the former, how does responsible architecture balance context with growth? This panel of architects, developers, and community advocates will explore the topic through the lens of active projects and their contributions to a rich, urban experience for residents and workers alike."
Video Courtesy of Visual Street Films The Dreams Happen Playhouse event is a biennial fundraiser for Rebuilding Together Peninsula (RTP) that teams architects and builders to create imaginatively designed playhouses that are auctioned to benefit RTP’s residential rehabilitation work. “Lacuna,” Olson Kundig’s contribution, offers an inventive take on the idea of a playhouse, blurring the boundaries between structure and sculpture. The abstract wooden cocoon is constructed out of cedar beams crisscrossed over a steel frame, creating a form reminiscent of an egg in a nest. An illuminated ladder allows children to access the interior “yolk.” All thirteen of this year’s playhouses are currently on display at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, where they will remain until the auction gala on Saturday, June 3. Olson Kundig teamed with Facebook and California-based Level 10 Construction to fabricate this year’s playhouse.
